BTBT x DAFT PUNK:
The Collection Design
Synthesizing the trajectory of one of the most influential projects in electronic music history for BUTOBEAT was, above all, a personal tribute. As a scene enthusiast, the creative challenge was to translate the duo’s global impact and iconic aesthetics into a print collection that balances robotic minimalism with the soul and groove of the dancefloor.
The creative direction focuses on transforming striking lyrics and historical visual elements into a contemporary design manifesto.
THE VISUAL CONNECTION BETWEEN HOUSE AND STREETWEAR
LOSE YOURSELF TO DANCE:
Groove and Identity (2013)
Released in 2013 as one of the cornerstones of the Random Access Memories album, "Lose Yourself to Dance" features the iconic vocals of Pharrell Williams. The track is an ode to disco-funk, focused on a hypnotic beat and the simplicity of the groove.
In the BTBT creative process, the challenge was to transpose this rhythmic repetition into graphic design. The print utilizes a dense typographic composition that simulates the echo effect and the constant pulsation of the music, transforming sonic harmony into a minimalist visual statement.
SYNTHESIZING THE ROBOTIC LEGACY FOR CONTEMPORARY STREETWEAR.
HUMAN AFTER ALL:
The Raw Essence (2005)
Released in 2005, the duo's third studio album marked an industrial turning point, blending minimalism and rock with classic French House. Human After All is a visceral and hypnotic masterpiece.
For BTBT, this aesthetic was translated through the strategic use of red, the color of pulse, energy, and alert. In the prints, red breaks the sobriety of black and white, symbolizing human fragility within a robotic structure and bringing a layer of "elegant aggression" that defines this record’s presence within the collection.
HARDER, BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER:
The Perfection Mantra
"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is more than a track, functioning as a manifesto of technical perfectionism. Released in 2001 on the Discovery album, the work became the definitive symbol of the fusion between man and machine through the iconic use of the vocoder.
In the BTBT curation, the print translates this obsession with constant evolution through robust, high-contrast typography, echoing the strength and surgical precision of one of the greatest anthems in electronic music history.
ONE MORE TIME:
The Eternal Celebration (2000)
Released as the lead single from the legendary Discovery album, "One More Time" is widely considered the ultimate French House anthem. Featuring the unforgettable vocals of Romanthony, the track captures pure euphoria and the desire to immortalize the moment on the dancefloor.
For BTBT, the print design focuses on visual dynamism, using a mirrored composition that references the rhythmic looping and contagious energy that defined an entire generation of clubbers worldwide.
DESIGN THAT PULSES TO THE RHYTHM OF THE DANCEFLOOR
AROUND THE WORLD:
The Infinite Loop (1997)
Released in 1997 as part of the debut album Homework, "Around the World" is a study on the power of repetition and the magnetic bassline. The track became a global phenomenon due to the hypnotic simplicity of its single lyric.
In the BTBT collection, the print reflects this sonic circularity through a typographic layout that surrounds the duo’s iconic silhouettes. The design focuses on continuous movement, capturing the essence of a song that turned minimalism into a gold standard for contemporary electronic music.
